Family Class

Family reunification is one of the pillars of Canada's immigration system. This program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close family members for permanent residence, helping families reunite and build their lives in Canada. It prioritizes family unity and offers pathways for spouses, common-law partners, conjugal partners, dependent children, parents, grandparents, and, in rare cases, other eligible relatives.

Sponsors are required to financially support the sponsored person’s basic needs for a specific period and ensure they do not depend on social assistance.

SPOUSE/ PARTNER/ FIANCE

Canada's spousal sponsorship program, part of the Family Class immigration category, is one of the most prioritized pathways for bringing loved ones together. It enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residency—regardless of whether they currently live together in Canada or are apart.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) places strong emphasis on family reunification, treating spousal sponsorship applications with a high level of urgency.

PARENTS/ GRANDPARENT SPONSORSHIP

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP).

  • Process: This program through a lottery system where potential sponsors submit an expression of interest, and selected applicants are invited to apply.
  • Sponsor’s Responsibility: Sponsors must meet minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements and sign a 20-year undertaking to provide financial support and ensure the sponsored individual does not rely on social assistance.

DEPENDENT CHILD SPONSORSHIP

You can sponsor your dependent children, whether natural or adopted, to live with you as permanent residents in Canada.

Eligibility

  • A child is considered a dependent if he or she is not married or in a common-law relationship and is under 22 years of age.
  • If a child is over 22 years of age, they may be considered a dependent if they have a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves.

Sponsor’s Responsibility:

To be responsible for supporting the child for 10 years or until they turn 25, whichever happens earlier.

OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS

Few exceptions exist wherein Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor other relatives, such as orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren under 18, or a close relative if they have no other eligible family members.

Sponsor your Wife, Husband, or Common-law Partner partners who are within Canada with a valid temporary resident status.

If the application is made from within Canada, the person you are sponsoring may apply for an open work permit that would allow them to work for any employer in Canada while the sponsorship application is being processed. It is possible for spouses or partners to come to Canada by first applying for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).
